City Council will meet TONIGHT at 6:30PM to receive an update on the Climate and Sustainability Team’s progress on the implementation of the Climate Action Plan and the Building Energy Reporting and Reduction (BERDO) ordinance at a Committee of the Whole meeting — in person (Council Chamber) and virtual (Zoom link) (Agenda).
The Council will be voting on acceptance of grants: $272K for Bluebike bikeshare program for additional bike stations in Newton as part of a program with Arlington and Watertown, a $635,454.54 Homeland Security Grant for Assistance for Firefighters, and accept a $60K contribution from UMASS Amherst – Mt. Ida for NewMo; settle a worker’s compensation claim for $25K; approve a $486,500 CPA funding request to complete Phase II of the Gath Pool Project; and approve a $950K request for public safety radio infrastructure.
The Nuestra Special Permit Application for a retail marijuana dispensary was voted out by Land Use Committee but the Planning Department has asked for additional time to confirm completion of peer review on traffic.
Two proposed Zoning Amendments: Request to amend the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) ordinance and a request to amend the Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance are pending recommendation from the Planning and Development Board which is scheduled to meet on Tuesday (see Agenda).
New on the City Council docket: Woodland Golf Club is looking to construct sport courts, warming hut, and additional parking; a 9-unit development request for 106 River Street; City is looking to create a mattress recycling program (this will be discussed at the Public Facilities Committee meeting on Wednesday (see Agenda)); the Mayor is submitting the FY2023-2027 Capital Improvement Plan and 5-year Financial Forecast; Councilors requesting creation of a Strategic and Operational Plan for Capital Impvoements; and a discussion regarding recent police officer details at the State Primary elections and a request to set the number of police officer details for all future elections.
The School Committee will meet on Monday (see Agenda) and discuss Final System Wide Goals.
The Parks and Recreation Commission will discuss a proposal regarding Waban Historical Interpretive Signs on Monday (see Agenda).

The Land Use Committee will meet jointly with the Planning and Development Board to hear a Request for a Special Permit/Site Plan Approval and Rezoning request for the Walker Center (136-144 Hancock Street). The Land Use Committee will hear additional special permit requests including the Crafts Street Elderly Housing with services proposal. (see Agenda).
Two dueling proposals to amend the Tree Preservation Ordinance will be discussed at the Programs and Services Committee on Wednesday evening. One is proposed by City Councilors (Malakie, Norton, Leary, Ryan, Wright, Lucas, Humphrey, Bowman, Markiewicz, Oliver, Downs, Laredo, and Grossman) and one is proposed by the Mayor. (See agenda)
