What’s Up in Newton — Week of 7/24/2022

Seven Full Demolition Requests will be reviewed by the Newton Historical Commission at its meeting this Thursday evening (go here for Zoom link). Three additional items include a Preservation Restriction for the Whipple- Beal Fence in the Newton Cemetery, a request for a letter of support for the West Newton Armory project, and a request for a Certificate of Appropriateness for alterations and new materials for the local landmarked house at 145 Warren Street. In environmental news, State Senator Cynthia Stone Creem announced that she was successful in securing funding for several environmental projects in Newton in the recent Economic Development Bill – S. 3018. The funding includes:

  • $70,000 for the City to expand its composting program and make composting starter kits available to residents free of charge,
  • $150,000 for the purchase of bike share stations, and
  • $75,000 for the design and construction of the Spears Park Community Garden.

In addition, Liora Silkes, the City’s Energy Coach announced that the City’s Sustainability Department just launched a Climate News newsletter (sign up here), and has selected Endless Energy as the vetted Home Performance Contractor to provide no-cost MassSave energy assessments, discounted insulation and air sealing work, and guidance on various home energy projects including heat pumps, solar panels, and electric vehicle charging.
