West Newton Cinema sells property, seeks new owner to continue operations

Family-run West Newton Cinema has announced that it has reached agreement to sell to Mark Development the property where the theatre is located and is seeking new owners for the theatre’s business. After more than 40 years in West Newton, the Bramante family will continue to operate the theatre in its current location for the next 18-24 months while it seeks an entity to continue operations — perhaps “a non-profit that would …support community arts and educational initiatives and maintain a focus on independent films.”

Mark Development has agreed to lease space to West Newton Cinema at its current location during this transition and has committed to allowing the theatre to remain in place if a new owner is found that can operate it sustainably. David Bramante says that the family’s priority is to find ways for West Newton Cinema to continue to be “a community gathering place, beacon for the arts, and resource to our neighborhood.” Community members may sign up to keep informed as events unfold.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise funds to support West Newton Cinema, and so far it has raised more than twice its goal of $25,000.
