Ward: Removal of Italian flag colors from Adams Street

I am writing to express deep concern and disappointment over the recent repainting of Adams Street with a standard yellow line—effectively erasing, without notice or consultation, a decades-long tradition that honors the Italian-American heritage of Nonantum.

For years, the green, white, and red striping ahead of the annual St. Mary of Carmen Festa has served as a vibrant expression of pride, unity, and cultural identity. It is a beloved tradition that reflects Newton’s diversity and community spirit. The mayor’s decision to remove it quietly—without alerting residents or Ward 1 City Councilors—feels disrespectful and opaque.

This action raises serious questions. Regardless of intent, the result is damaging as it undermines public trust and alienates a proud, tight-knit community.

In a city that values inclusion and transparency, this decision sends the wrong message. Cultural traditions like this one enrich our city and deserve protection, not removal under the cover of night.

I urge Mayor Fuller to acknowledge the harm caused, engage with the Nonantum community and Ward 1 representatives, and take immediate steps to restore this cherished tradition. Adams Street should be repainted in the colors of the Italian flag in time for this year’s Festa — and ensure this meaningful symbol remains part of Newton’s civic life.
