Lane restrictions and overnight detours on Mass Pike / I-95 North interchange

The next four years of MassDOT’s project to replace or repair eight bridges around the Mass Pike (I-90) and I-95 interchange will require lane restrictions and occasional overnight detours to keep the construction work safe. Fig City News has prepared these maps to illustrate our understanding of the MassDOT announcements.

Long-term lane restrictions

MassDOT announced that the following routes between the Mass Pike and I-95 North have been reduced to one lane for the next four years (until the fall of 2027):

  • Exit 123A from the Mass Pike (I-90) East to I-95 North
  • Exit 39B from I-95 North to the Mass Pike (I-90)

Short-term detours due to ramp closures

In addition, there will be occasional, short-term, overnight ramp closures as required throughout the project. For instance, the following near-term, overnight closures of ramps have been announced:

  • September 15-17. September 22-24. December 15-18:
Ramps from I-90 East and West to I-95 North will be closed 11PM-4AM. Northbound traffic will be rerouted onto I-95 South to Exit 37 (Route 16) to reverse direction.
  • September 17-20. September 24-27. December 19: I-95 northbound Exit 39B to I-90 will be closed 11PM-4AM. I-95 North traffic bound for I-90 East or West will be rerouted to Exit 41 (Route 20) to reverse direction.

MassDOT said the lane restrictions and ramp closures are needed to enable safe construction to repair or replace eight bridges in the Newton/Weston area over the next four years, during which time, “Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.”

Residents can sign up to receive MassDOT email notices about the project and/or use the free Mass511.com traveler information service for real-time maps of traffic and closures, as well as live traffic cameras and other information.
