Alex Andrew Bohm, a 57-year-old Newton resident, died Monday night at Brigham and Women’s Hospital due to serious injuries sustained in a cycling collision with a UPS truck at the intersection of Watertown Street and Bridge Street in Nonantum that evening. Newton Police responded at 5:24 PM. As reported by the Middlesex District Attorney and the Newton Police, the UPS truck driver, identified as another 57-year-old Newton man, remained at the scene.

District Attorney Marian Ryan’s office identified the cyclist as Alex Bohm of West Newton, where he had lived since 2005. Bohm was a developmental, molecular, and chemical biology associate professor at Tufts Medical Center. He began his work at Tufts as an adjunct assistant professor in 1998 and advanced to Associate Professor in 2003. Bohm was remembered at a gathering at the center on Tuesday.

Newton resident Artie Jackson was a friend of Bohm and rode the commuter rail with him daily before the pandemic. “Andrew was a great guy — smart, thoughtful, kind, and very generous. This is such a tragedy,” said Jackson, citing as examples of his generosity Bohm’s work advising post-docs and acting as Tufts Post-Doctoral Officer. Jackson noted that Bohm was an avid sailor who often sailed to Maine and back.

Preliminary investigation indicates the UPS driver was traveling eastbound on Watertown Street and turning left on Bridge Street while Bohm was traveling westbound on Watertown Street.
