“No Override Newton” campaign files pre-election report

Faced with the prospect of personal fines of $25 per day for not filing a pre-election campaign-finance report as required eight days before the election, the treasurer of the No Override Newton ballot committee has filed the group’s pre-election report at City Hall. The report is dated March 17 and was posted to the City’s website on March 22. As previously reported, the group had opted not to file its report before the election.

According to the report, which covers the committee’s operations through March 6 (eight days prior to the election, as required), nearly 80 percent of the $25,304 funding for the effort came from two individuals: Committee chair and treasurer Traute Marshall and Newton real estate developer Steve Snider each contributed $10,000 to the campaign. The Newton Republican Committee also contributed $1,000.

No Override Newton spent $16,460.79 before March 6, with $8,843.21 available for the campaign’s final days before the election. Of that total, it spent $10,000 for Internet advertising, $5,650 for mailers and yard signs, and $500 for telephone outreach.

No Overide Newton was not alone in relying on a concentrated set of donors. Nearly half of the $43,875 raised by Vote Yes for Newton, the committee supporting the override, came from six parties

Full spending reports of additional contributions and spending are due at City Hall 30 days after the election.
